Compulsory Basic Training (Feb 2011)
CBT is a foundation course designed to give new and novice riders a level of competence which will allow them to practice safely on their own and gain the necessary exposure to traffic to make them safe on the road.
Anyone
coming for the motorcycle test will need to produce a valid CBT Certificate
which will be valid for 2 years.

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) Who will be affected?
-If you have held a full car licence before 21st February 2011, you will have one year to gain your full motorcycle licence WITHOUT doing a CBT course so NOW is the time to start your motorcycle lessons with Learn2Ride.
-Learner motorcyclists who had provisional motorcycle entitlement prior to the
introduction of CBT will have to complete a CBT course within 12 months of the
introduction of CBT. Just like above, you will have one year to gain your full motorcycle licence
WITHOUT doing a CBT course so NOW is the time to start your motorcycle lessons with Learn2Ride.
(New drivers who gained a full car licence after 21st February 2011 will continue to get provisional motorcycle entitlement, but will have to complete CBT if they wish to ride a motorcycle unaccompanied.)
-Full moped licence holder by virtue of passing a car test (post CBT introduction).

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) Content and Structure (Module 1)
Element A Introduction To CBT - Course aims, correct attitude, Highway Code and legal requirements to ride on the road, the importance of wearing protective equipment including the correct fitting and fastening of helmets, eyesight test.
Element B Practical Training - Be familiar with the controls, be able to carry out daily and weekly machine checks, take the bike on and off the stand, wheel the machine, balance and bring to a controlled halt by braking, start and stop the engine.

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) Structure (Module 2)
Element C Practical On Site Riding - Practice riding skills in a safe environment, ride in a straight line and bring to a controlled halt, ride slowly under control, change gear satisfactorily, negotiate simulated bends safely, figure of eight under control, simulated left and right turns from major to minor roads and when emerging at junctions, correctly using OSM/ PSL routine, emergency stop, steering to avoid a collision, U- turn and rear observation.
Element D Pre-Road Ride Briefing - Understand how to reduce risks, attitude to
riding, visibility and vulnerability, ride defensively, rear observation at appropriate times, ride at the correct speed, road position and separation distance according to the road and traffic conditions, drug and alcohol use, passengers and loads.
Understand the correct procedures for dealing with varying weather and road surface conditions when riding, bends, roundabouts, one way systems, traffic light controlled junctions including multi-lane junctions, dual carriageways including the use of acceleration and deceleration lanes, filtering in traffic, incidents and First Aid and Eco-safe riding.

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) Structure (Module 3)
Element E Practical On Road Riding (minimum of 4 hours) - Ride competently and safely in the following traffic situations: traffic light signals/ controlled junctions including multi lane junctions, roundabouts, junctions, pedestrian crossings, gradients, bends and obstructions, dual carriageways, including the use of acceleration and deceleration lanes, independent riding. Undertake the following exercises in normal road conditions: Carry out a U-turn manoeuvre satisfactorily, bring the machine to a stop under full control as in an emergency.
